Rajasthan is known for its rich culture and tradition and is home to some of the most haunted places in the world. The stories about these haunted places will make you experience a blend of history, mystery, and the thrill of some paranormal activities. 1- Bhangarh Fort: The fort is known as the “Fort of Ghost”. It is believed that there are ghosts in the fort. The fort was constructed by King Bhagwant Das in 1583.

Location: Alwar District

Story: There are many stories relating to the destruction of the fort. According to the legends, the fort’s land was owned by a saint named Guru Blaunath. Madho Singh before the construction of the fort sought his permission and he granted his permission on the condition that the shadow of the fort should never fall on his house. However, Madho Singh’s successor ignored these conditions which led to the cause of the destruction of the fort. Another story states that the fort is cursed by a magician who fell in love with Queen Ratnavati. But the rejection by the queen led to the fort’s destruction.

Experience: People believe that some strange voices are heard often when put their ears on the wall. Local people also claimed that the sounds of women screaming and crying, and breaking bangles come from the fort. Many visitors felt that someone was following them in the fort.

2- Kuldhara Village: Are you scared to know that the entire village vanished overnight? Yes, this is what happened according to legends. The Kuldhara village where once over 5000 families resided vanished overnight.

Location: Jaisalmer District

Story: The popular story of the destruction of the village dates back to around 200 years ago. There was a Diwan who wanted to have his evil eyes on a village girl. To save the honour of the girl and the respect of Paliwal Brahmins, the entire village decided to leave the village. But before they go, they curse the village.

Experience: Tourists claim that the voices of the Paliwal Brahmins are still being heard. In some houses, shadows often appear. People say that whoever comes here at night has met with an accident.

3- Rana Kumbha Palace: This fort is said to be one of the most haunted places in Rajasthan. The palace has a famous historical story and a film named “Padmavat” was also made on the haunted historical story related to the fort.

Location: Chittorgarh

Story: It is said that when Alauddin Khilji, the sultan of Delhi, attacked the palace, Maharani Padmini and her 700 female servants performed the Jauhar. Since then, several incidents were reported where people witnessed sounds of ladies screaming for help to save their empire.

Experience: One recent spooky incident about the palace will surely thrill you. A group of friends stayed at night in the palace and saw a lady wearing royal attire with a burnt face asking for help to save their kingdom.

4- Chand Baori: It is one of the deepest and largest step wells in India. 3,500 little steps that descend 13 storeys below ground level are set in a precise geometric arrangement. Visitors are astounded by the stepwell’s enormous size and complex symmetrical construction.

Location: Abhaneri Village, Dausa District

Story: You will be scared to know that this stepwell was built at night by ghosts according to the legends. Although the history leaders state that it was built by King Chanda of the Nikumbha Dynasty.

Experience: Chand Baori has a reputation for being spooky because of its frightening appearance, the sound of footsteps echoing from the abandoned well, and the general air of isolation.

5- Nahargarh Fort: Travellers visit this fort, particularly for its architecture and serene surroundings. But whoever visited the fort at night has experienced some paranormal activities at night. The fort was built by Sawai Raja Man Singh for his queens. It is said that the king was so passionate about this fort, that his soul still lives in the fort.

Location: Edge of the Aravalli hills, Jaipur

When you look at the beautiful building in the daylight, it feels like watching a dream but have you ever visited the location at night? The experience is just the opposite. The submerged stories of the building were permanently closed to visitors.

Location: Jaipur

Experience: The building was once a summer retreat for the Maharajas, but now it is said that no one dares to go inside the palace at night due to some strange voices and screams heard from the palace.

7- Sudhabay Kund: This place is associated with Lord Brahma and holds religious importance. You can witness the customs and rituals that have been practised for years.

Location: Pushkar

Story: While holding a religious importance this place is also famous for its annual “Ghost Fair” where one can get liberation from ghosts and spirits. Though not much is known about the location, during the Ghost Fair, people come to Sudhabay from all around to seek solace from spiritual illnesses.

8- NH-79 Dudu Village: The Ajmer-Udaipur Highway is known as the road that asks for blood. There are several terrifying incidents connected to the highway and the nearby town of Dudu.

Story: Once when child marriage was a common practice in India, a 5-day-old baby girl was to be married off to a 3-year-old toddler. The baby girl’s mother objected to the wedding and fled to the highway, where she was struck by a tourist car, instantly killing both her and the kid.

Experience:  Three companions saw the ghost of a woman holding a baby in her arms while travelling the Ajmer-Udaipur highway. She sat back on the car seat and guided them to go out of the village. 

9- Jagatpura: Beyond Rajasthan’s stunning palaces, there’s a ghostly aura around this popular tourist destination. This is because the spooky location is a neighbourhood where humans coexist with witches. This place is among the Most Haunted Places in Rajasthan.

Location: Jaipur

Story: It is said that the king of this place was greedy and arrogant. So, he was cursed by many villages as they starved to death because of his evil practices.

Experience: Residents of the residential area have reported seeing witches stalking the roadways of Jagatpura. Walking here after dark is an unsettling experience.

10- Brij Raj Bhawan: According to the legends, the majestic Bhawan is haunted by the ghost of an English soldier. Despite its stunning exterior, this location is regarded as the scariest in all of Rajasthan.

Location: Kota, Rajasthan

Story: Indian rebels murdered Major Burton, an East India Co. employee, and his family at the Brij Raj Bhavan during the Sepoy Mutiny. Local people believed that his ghost roams in this spooky location.

Experience: After the death of Major Burton, the Queen of Kota conquered the mansion. In her interview with a journalist revealed that she have seen Major Burton ghost in the mansion. The spirit is harmless and causes no physical damage to the fort. However, the ghost of Burton has a habit of hitting the dozing security guards.

Kuldhara Village Story

There’s a strange secret surrounding the destruction of Kuldhara Village. The story begins about 200 years ago when Kuldhara was a prosperous village colonized by Paliwal Brahmins along with 84 neighboring villages. Things were going smoothly until an evil eye fell upon the village. There was a Diwan of the state named Salim Singh who had his eyes on a beautiful girl in the village. He was so obsessed with the girl that he desperately wanted to possess her. To fulfil his obsession, he began to exert pressure on the Brahmins. The situation got intense and Diwan sent a message to the girl’s parents that if he did not get the girl by the next full moon, he would attack the village and take her away.

The conflict between Diwan and the village Brahmins was now a matter of self-respect for villagers and woman’s honor. To resolve and to find a solution to the problem, a meeting was held in the village square where over 5000 families decided to leave the village for their honor. It is being said that all 84 neighboring villages gathered at a temple and decided that they would not give their daughter to Diwan. The next evening, the entire village was desolated and today also not a single bird enters the borders of the village. It is believed that Brahmins curse the place while leaving. As time passed, 82 villages were re-established except Kuldhara Village and Khaba Village, despite all efforts. These villages now have become the tourist spot and are under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India.

It is said that the village is possessed by supernatural powers. Many tourists who visit the place claim that the voices of the Paliwal Brahmins who once lived here can still be heard. They also said that one can feel the presence of Paliwal Brahmins around them. The sounds of a bustling market, the voices of women talking, and the jingling of their bangles and anklets can always be heard. The administration has built a gate for tourists to visit the village during the daytime, but entry to the village at night is restricted.

People believe that there’s a temple in the village that is untouched by the curse. They said that the sound of the pain of the Paliwal Brahmins can still be heard. Also, in some houses, shadows often appear. In the daylight, everything seems like a historical story but as the night begins a mysterious world of spiritual forces can be felt. People say that whoever has come here at night has met with an accident.

In May 2013, a team from the Paranormal Society, a Delhi-based organization researching ghosts and spirits, spent a night in Kuldhara Village. The team agreed that there was something unusual there. In the evening, their drone camera was taking aerial pictures of the village, but as soon as it reached above the well, it plummeted to the ground. It was as if someone didn’t want the camera there. It’s true that thousands of families migrated from Kuldhara, and it’s also true that traces of Rajasthani culture can still be found in Kuldhara today.

A team from the Paranormal Society visited the village and revealed that they had a ghost box through which they talked to the spirits. Some spirits even revealed their names. When the team was returning they found children’s handprints on their cars. However, it’s also true that the stories of ghosts and spirits in Kuldhara are merely illusions.

According to historians, the Paliwal Brahmins had buried their wealth, which included a large amount of gold, silver, and diamonds, underground. This is why anyone who comes here starts digging everywhere, hoping to find the treasure. Even today, the village can be found dug up in many places.

Entry Fee, Timings, and Time Required to Visit Kuldhara Village

It takes 2-3 hours to visit Kuldhara Village. The time to visit the mysterious village is 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The entry fee is Rs. 10 per person and to visit by car, the entry fee is Rs. 50 per person. The best time to visit the village is between October to March as there is less temperature so you can enjoy walking around the desert.

How to Reach Kudhara?

Kuldhara Village is 20 km away from Jaisalmer. You can take a cab or hire a car on rent which will straight away leave you at the entrance gate of the haunted village. You can also visit the Sam Sand Dunes, another tourist destination in Jaisalmer on the way.
